Barry K. Egeland, age 79 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully, surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at his home in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, January 13 at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Barry K. Egeland was born November 30, 1944 in Alexandria, Louisiana to Willard and Theresa (Evens) Egeland. He was a 1962 graduate of Wilson High School in Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1966 majoring in accounting. Barry enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January of 1967 and served as a Supply Officer on a guided missile destroyer until his discharge in November of 1969. On October 4, 1969 he married Lois Ann Lahr at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.
In November of 1969, Barry began a two year program for electrician at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Upon graduating in 1971, he joined the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #292 and began a four year apprenticeship program. In 1976, he moved to Getty Township in Stearns County and started Barry’s Electric which he operated until his retirement in 2014.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Knights of Columbus, Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853, American Legion Post 67, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Barry enjoyed fishing, playing cards, reading, maintaining his lawn and garden, doing projects for his kids, and vacationing with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Lois Egeland; five children, Kris (Jim) Harrington, Jeff (Jodi) Egeland, Greg (Tiffany) Egeland, Darin Egeland, and Lori (Kurt) Althaus; nine grandchildren, Brittany (Anthony), Joshua, Braeden, Anna, Brenna, Emma, Noah, Cody, and Kylee; two great-grandchildren, Lowlla and Camy, with #3 due late summer that Barry was blessed to learn about over Christmas; and sister, Janet Robbins of Cedar, Minnesota.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Theresa Egeland; father and mother-in-law, Al and Hyacinth Lahr; and brother-in-law, Ralph Borgerding.
