Aloys "Al" Athmann, age 98 of Spring Hill died Saturday, March 13, 2004 at the Melrose Area Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 16 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill. Rev. Leo Leisen will officiate with interment following in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. St. Michael's Men's Society will pray at 7:30 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Al Athmann was born on May 30, 1905 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to Bernard and Veronica (Heinze) Athmann. He was united in marriage to Petronella "Nellie" Winter on September 25, 1928 in Spring Hill. Al farmed most of his life in the Spring Hill area retiring in 1964. He enjoyed playing cards, woodworking, and making hangers. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill and St. Michael's Men's Society.

Survivors include his children, Pat Kruzel of Eden Valley, Alice Athmann of Spring Hill, Marcie Welle and her husband, Don of Melrose, Joe Athmann and his wife, Lou of Spring Hill, Josephine Ertl of Waite Park, Tony Athmann and his wife, Phyllis of Sauk Centre, and Gene Athmann and his wife, Carol of Spring Hill; 26 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Veronica Athmann; wife, Nellie (Winter) Athmann on July 31, 1995; son, Stan Athmann; brothers and sisters, Henry, Joe, Hubert, John and Christ Athmann, Katie Michels, Theresa Wander, Magdalene Bohlig, and Veronica Kochman.

Serving as casket bearers will be Bryon Kruzel, Jeff Welle, Rick Athmann, Glen Ertl, Kenneth Athmann, and Kevin Athmann. Serving as cross bearer will be Dale Athmann and scripture bearer will be LuAnn Arme. Honorary bearers will be Al's grandchildren.
