Alma E. Herges, age 94 of Melrose, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, July 23, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Eb Schefers officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Alma Elizabeth Brickweg was born February 19, 1924 in Melrose, Minnesota to Frank and Mary (Altendahl) Brickweg. On September 3, 1946 she was united in marriage to Eugene "Red" Herges at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Prior to her marriage, Alma worked at REA. She raised her family and when the last child went to school, she returned to work at Kraft Foods. In her younger years, Alma was an avid bowler. She was a very competitive person, especially when it came to playing cards. She was very active in volunteering at Pine Villa and lead many rosaries there. Her love of quilting was shown by the many quilts she made for her family.
She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa, Christian Mothers, SCORE, and a member of the Big Birch Lake Association where she served as treasurer for many years. She also served as secretary for Millwood Township. Alma loved her family, relatives, friends, her pets, music, and relaxing at her home on Big Birch Lake. Most of all, she loved her husband and best friend of 66 years, Red.
Survivors include her children, Linda (Wayne) Engstrand of Chandler, Arizona, Randy (Suzy) Herges of Waconia, Richard Herges of Melrose, Ronald (Dee) Herges of Wausau, Wisconsin, Steve (Jeanette) Herges of Pelham, Alabama, son-in-law, Paul Schneider of Perham, Joe Herges of Melrose, and Ann (Brad Klatt) Tschida of Melrose; 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Marte (Al) Toenies of Royalton.
Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene "Red" Herges on June 22, 2009; parents; daughter, Mary Schneider on November 28, 2015; brothers, Norbert, Frank, Raymond, and Clarence Brickweg; and sister, Ann Woeste.
Serving as casket bearers will be Michael Herges, Nick Schneider, Joe Schneider, McKenzie Brown, Alicia Herges, and Chelsea Herges. Cross bearer will be Nicole Tschida-Notch and scripture bearer will be Tara Hill. Gift bearers will be Marisa Herges and Ari Cully. Honorary bearers will be Bryan Herges, Tate Engstrand, Renae Smith, and Nuith Engstrand.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to CentraCare Health Pine Villa Nursing Home.
