Alda Mae Mayers, age 82 of New Munich, died peacefully surrounded by her family after a battle with leukemia on Monday, March 4, 2013 at her home in New Munich, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 7 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be held at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Christian Women and Catholic United Financial at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Alda Mae Gilk was born February 19, 1931 in Albany Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Jacob and Clara (Weinmann) Gilk. She graduated from Albany High School in 1949 and worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul for two years. On September 11, 1951 she married Raymond Mayers at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. The couple farmed south of New Munich until they retired in 1989, and then moved into town. After retirement, Alda Mae was a food service worker for the Melrose Area School.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, the Christian Women, and Catholic United Financial. She enjoyed quilting and sewing for family, traveling and going on casino runs, playing cards, fishing, both flower and vegetable gardening, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Mayers of New Munich; children, David (Shirley) Mayers of Swanville, Mary Jane (Stan) Kortenbusch of Albany, Alice (Dennis) Groetsch of Alexandria, Ruth (Tom) Boeckermann of Lakeville, and Tim (Lori) Mayers of Freeport; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Connie (Eugene) Chock of St. Joseph; and brother, Rollie (Tillie) Gilk of Albany.

Alda Mae was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Herbert Gilk and Oliver Gilk; sister, Lucetta Lischwe; and an infant great-grandson, Joseph.

Serving as casket bearers will be Keith Kortenbusch, Michael Kortenbusch, Ben Mayers, Joel Mayers, Kevin Groetsch, Corey Groetsch, Thomas Boeckermann, and Kurt Mayers. Cross bearer will be Ashley Mayers and scripture bearer will be Crystle Illa. Flower bearer will be Shanelle Mayers and readers will be Amy Hendricks and Kimberly Poitra. The eulogy will be read by Tina Streit and honorary bearers will be the Christian Women.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Coborn Cancer Center.
