Alcuin H. Stroeing, age 92 of Melrose died peacefully Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at the Pine Haven Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 5 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Vince Lieser officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. followed by the Paynesville Knights of Columbus and Sts. Bernard and Elizabeth Council at 8 p.m. Thursday evening.
Alcuin Stroeing was born April 14, 1914 in Lastrup, Minnesota to Henry and Anna (Nathe) Stroeing. He was united in marriage to Merena "Joie" Welle on September 16, 1946 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple lived in Melrose their entire lives. Alcuin worked at the west Kraft Plant, in Melrose, until retiring in 1974. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose, Sts. Bernard and Elizabeth Council, and the St. Louis Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Knights of Paynesville. Alcuin enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, helping on the farm, fishing, hunting, playing cards, splitting wood, and blowing snow for the entire neighborhood. He liked to go to the casino, but only if he came home a winner. Many in Melrose remember the 1930 Ford Model A that Alcuin was often seen driving around town and everyday to work at Kraft.
Survivors include his children, Dan Stroeing and his wife, Mary of Seattle, WA, Mary Ann Biskey and her husband, Gary of Elk River, Lou Ann Jacobson and her husband, John of Minneapolis, and Quincy Stroeing of Minneapolis; three grandchildren, Nicole Popptiz, Jason Biskey, and Matt Biskey; one great granddaughter, Taylor Popptiz; sisters-in-law, Lucille Stroeing of St. Cloud, Donna Stroeing of St. Cloud, and Loretta (Welle) Rieland of Melrose.
Alcuin was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Stroeing in 1969 and Anna (Nathe) Stroeing in 1970; wife, Merena "Joie" (Welle) Stroeing on May 18, 1997; infant daughter, Mary Kay Stroeing on October 14, 1947; and son, Alcuin C. "Junior" Stroeing on March 11, 1978; four younger brothers, Lambert, Odillo "Del", Leander "Lee", and Vernon F. Stroeing.
Serving as casket bearers will be Matt, Jason, and Gary Biskey, Nicole Popptiz, John Jacobson, and Mary Agrell Stroeing. Serving as cross bearer will be Denise Rieland. Gift bearers will be Darlene Bussman and Jean Hinnenkamp. Readers will be Gregg Stroeing and Gary Stroeing. Honorary bearers will be Alcuin's friends, Robbie Hinnenkamp, Eddie Bussman, Gilbert Klaphake, Rich Klassen, Cletus Scheer, Duane Hiltner, Ray Brickweg, Josie Schoenberg, Maynard Nathe, Tony Kulzer, Clarence Gerads, Urb Schulzetenberg, Ervin Duevel, John Faber, Vern Hinnenkamp and Frank Klaphake.
Memorials are preferred.
