Agnes Kaas was born on April 1, 1935 on a farm near Osakis, Minnesota to Casper and Hyacintha (Fischer) Schluender. She delighted in telling her family stories of the early days on the farm with her older sister and eight brothers, including the energy she spent making sure her brothers got to school on time. It was on a bus on the way to Moorhead to babysit for her brother's children, that she met the man who would become her husband, Lawrence Kaas. They corresponded by letters for nine months before they would be together again and were married on April 12, 1955 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis. They settled first in Alexandria, Minnesota and later moved to Lawrence's hometown of Sauk Centre. The great delight in Agnes and Lawrence's life has been their seven children. Agnes was a full-time mother who was also a bookkeeper for Lawrence's business and often worked in the shop, especially during the years he was on the road fixing office machines. Agnes was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church. One of the family's favorite stories is the year Agnes hatched a butterfly, which lived in the kitchen. The gentle beauty and grace of a butterfly has always reminded the children, and later grandchildren, of their mother. The house was often adorned with butterflies Agnes would receive as gifts from family and friends.
