Agnes K. Hiltner, age 92, of Melrose, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Melrose Area Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 20 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Vince Lieser officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Christian Mothers, Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary at 6 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Agnes Herzog was born March 21, 1917 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Gertrude (Schwieters) Herzog. On January 8, 1936 she married Norbert Hiltner in Melrose. After their marriage the couple farmed for many years. After they retired from farming, Agnes worked for Schulzetenberg Hardware in Melrose and later the couple owned and operated Hiltner Upholstery Company in Melrose. Agnes enjoyed playing cards, sewing and gardening. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, Melrose Senior Citizens, Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary.

Survivors include her children, Jen Toenies of Melrose, Annie (Erv) Thielen of New Munich, Tom (Shirle) Hiltner of Melrose, Mike (Ann) Hiltner of Cold Spring, Bridget (Vern) Westbrock of Rochester, Jim (Jan) Hiltner of Limon, CO, Ruben (Ialeen) Hiltner of Alexandria, Gene (Laura) Hiltner of Greeley, CO, Mary (Dave) Decker of Melrose, and Chuck (Ruth) Hiltner of Baxter; daughter-in-law, Iris Hiltner of Melrose; 40 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren; and sister, Eleanor Dierkhissing of Freeport.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norbert Hiltner on March 10, 1992; daughters, Rosemary Hiltner and Luella Rieland; son, Jerry Hiltner; sons-in-law, Marvin Rieland and Harry Toenies; brothers and sisters, Bertha Dickhaus, Elizabeth Hallerman, Mayme Dickhaus, Angeline Wessel, Zita Moening, Alvina Moening, Alfred Herzog, Irene Viere, and Aloys Herzog.

Serving as casket bearers will be Agnes' sons, Tom, Mike, Jim, Ruben, Gene, and Chuck. Serving as cross bearer will be Bridget Westbrock and scripture bearer will be Mary Decker. Honorary bearers will be the Christian Mothers, Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary.
